Bill was Head of Marketing for a major regional telecommunications provider. In an industry which depends on its marketing team to turn the slightest technical edge into grand campaigns, John’s team - and consequently the quality of the campaigns they create - was generally bland and lackluster.

At Stocktaking, we found that while he was an organized and systematic manager John tended to be aloof and mechanical in his relationships. His direct reports considered their work as “just a job to be done”. At Course-Charting, we identified specific measurable goals for John to better engage his people, develop teamwork, and inspire them enough to be thrilled and excited with what they do. At Operationalization we worked with John to achieve these goals: from the simple process of knowing his direct reports in greater depth (their career goals, personal values, skills and talents, work styles) to helping him customize his management style to their respective needs. During Progress Evaluation, we conducted 360 dipstick surveys and interviews with his direct reports and continued working on specific areas that needed additional attention. Six months after the engagement, the team was significantly more animated and excited with their work, and considered John as among the best managers in the company. Twelve months after, John’s team launched a nationwide marketing campaign behind a new service that increased the company’s subscriber base by 40%.
